We’re only a few weeks away from incessant Christmas music on the radio and A Christmas Story being replayed a million times (thanks TNT). However, before we get to the jolliest time of the year, we’ve got the culinary marathon that is Thanksgiving to run first.
Of course we’ll take some time next week to remember the things we’re thankful for, but do we ever consider expressing this thankfulness the other 364 days of the year?
This weekend, we’re starting a new series at Journey called Grattitude, where we’ll be looking at what it looks like to respond graciously in life with thankfulness.
Before you ask: No, we didn’t misspell our series title. We believe our attitudes have a great deal to do with determining how we express our gratitude. You see, being thankful is one thing, but having gratitude neccessitates a response; an expression. This is especially true when it comes to our relationship with Christ and how we respond to the free gift of grace that is our salvation and life.
Look at how Paul instructs us to respond with gratitude:

Colossians 2:6-7
Therefore, as you received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk in Him, having been firmly rooted and now being built up in Him and established in your faith, just as you were instructed, overflowing in gratitude.

Paul didn’t tell us to just have gratitude, but rather to be “overflowing in gratitude.” When we’re overflowing with something in our lives, whether it be happiness, sorrow, or even gratitude, its difficult for people to not take note.
In Part 1, we’re going to be taking a look at the power of our words, how expressing our gratitude verbally can truly impact our attitude and orientation in life. This is true one-on-one with others, with our family and friends, and yes, even in our personal relationships with Christ.
Think about the last time someone truly expressed their gratitude for something you did for them.  Consider how you felt and how that moment impacted you. There truly is power in our words.
When it comes to our relationship with God, expressing our gratitude to God is essentially worship.  Simply saying “thank you” to God is one way we can worship him with our words and posture in life.
After this Sunday, you’ll be challenged to take some time to consider how you express gratitude in your every day life and how doing that will change you as a person.  Come this weekend ready to be changed, not because of anything we’ve done, but because of what only God could do in us!
