Your choices matter.
That truth is taught to us in most of our lives. Even from a very young age, parents will teach their kids that their choices can dictate the quality and direction of their lives.
You touch a hot stove, you’ll get burned.
Get good grades, you’ll be rewarded.
Be kind to others, you’re often treated kind in return.
Understanding the power of our personal choices isn’t so much about learning how to get what you want as it is about knowing how your actions dictate the quality and direction of your life. However, we don’t always make the best choices.
Just like good choices, bad choices not only determine the quality and direction of our lives, they can also scar us deeply. They can leave us with ugly weights around our necks, like regret and shame.
And just like good choices, you can’t go back and change them.
So, what do you do if you’ve made a choice in your past that still haunts you?
There isn’t a magic formula, but in my experience, two things have helped:
Grace & Time.
Grace reminds us that there is nothing we can do to make God love us more or less. No matter how dark or difficult the situation, no choice you ever make can distance you from God, ever.
Time provides clarity and perspective, even with the most difficult of situations. Time really does heal wounds, as it gives us the ability to physically distance ourselves from our decisions.
However, time alone doesn’t heal. If we simply distance ourselves from our choices physically, with time, and never process our hurt and pain through grace, we will only harm ourselves further by bottling up our pain and emotions. It takes both grace and time to fully process our past choices.
This weekend at Journey, our Family Pastor, Don Gentry, will be sharing some of his own story and will be talking about what it looks like to deal with your personal choices that have caused fractures in your story. This is going to be a powerful weekend, so do what you can to join us this weekend for Part 2 of Fracture: Finding Hope in the Pain.
