Just a few short months ago, we walked through a series called Context, where we took a look at what the Old Testament is and why it matters in our lives today. As a part of that series, we talked about the prophets.
The prophets are both a section of the Old Testament as well as actual people who lived and were the mouthpiece of God for many years. These were men who were appointed by God to guide and lead His people, as well as reveal the coming of the Messiah (i.e. Jesus).
This seems like a simple task, but often these men were met with hostility and resistance, especially when God had called them to speak out against something they were doing. Honestly, I bet that these people knew what they were doing was wrong, whether it be worshiping other gods or turning away from God entirely, but they didn’t want to be called out for doing it.
I think we all know that feeling. Where we’re caught in the middle of something we know we shouldn’t be doing, but we don’t want it to be pointed out to us. Especially as kids, this was something I’m sure we were all accustomed to experiencing.
Part of the prophets’ job was to guide and lead God’s people. At times, this meant holding up a very clear mirror to the very nasty actions the people of God were doing. I think it would be fair to say that these prophets were the recipients of a lot of hate.
However, I believe that if those people, and even us today, could learn a lot from these men, if we were to hold back our anger or frustration with their honesty we could find out what’s beneath all of that. I believe that even when we don’t want to hear it, even when we hate the messenger, we will find that there is much we can and should learn about ourselves in these moments of clarity.
In this series, we’re going to take a look at 5 prophets’ stories to learn 5 things from each of them:
Who are they?
Where & when did they live?
What was their issue?
How did they deal with it and what was their result?
What can we learn from them?
Our goal here is understanding. Not just understanding about who these men were and their story, but also what can we learn today from their lives?
By understanding these prophets and learning from what God did in and through them with the people of God, I believe that we can learn more about who God is and how he would call us to live as His sons & daughters.
