I don’t know about you, but growing up in the Church, evangelism just made me feel icky.  Maybe it was some of what Zack mentioned in his post on Wednesday, but I never felt comfortable with it.
Honestly, it didn’t have anything to do with my faith.  I was always confident in what I believe and why I did, it was just the sharing my faith part that felt uncomfortable.  Maybe it was because I didn’t have a very good understanding of what evangelism actually was.
In our new series, The E-Word, we’re going to be demystifying evangelism and taking a look at what it looks like to live a life where evangelism is simply a natural expression.  I know this hasn’t always been the case for me, but I think I’ve come a long way since I’ve started to understand what evangelism isn’t and what evangelism is.

Evangelism isn’t . . .

Sharing your spiritual opinion with other people to win an argument.
Telling others how they should live based on what you believe.
Bullying or scaring people into having “faith.”
Yelling at people on the street about your faith.
Having an academic argument for the sake of embarrassing another.

Evangelism is . . .

Sharing your story with someone.
Giving hope to someone in a time of need.
Having an honest conversation with someone who believes something other than you.
Thoughtfully explaining to someone why you believe what you believe.
Having an academic discussion for the sake of sharing Christ’s love.

A lot of what evangelism is and isn’t rests on our hearts, our motivations.  I hope that through this series we can not only have a better understanding of evangelism, but are equipped to make evangelism a part of our daily lives.  I know I need this encouragement and training, and I hope that we all can walk away ready to share our faith.
