I’ve really enjoyed these few weeks taking a look at the Old Testament, learning more about it, and how it applies to our lives today. This weekend we’re focusing on my favorite section of the Old Testament, the Wisdom Books.
These are the books Job through Song of Solomon, spanning everything from truisms and stories meant to teach us about life, to songs and poems inspired by God. Sometimes, I feel like the wisdom books were written just for me (mostly cause I could use A LOT of wisdom in my life).
The wisdom books are probably the most easily applicable section of the Old Testament. Its easy to want to jump in and find a proverb or a psalm that speaks to your current circumstances. I remember a time where I needed to make a decision that would define my character, and I found this proverb:
Whoever walks in integrity walks securely, but he who makes his ways crooked will be found out.
Proverbs 10:9
I would have never naturally connected integrity with security in my life, but it makes so much sense. This may be a simple, perhaps obvious truth, but being reminded of these truisms can help us to be more like Christ in our daily lives.
Wisdom can also serve us with emotional security. When we’re in a storm or dealing with loss in our lives, the wisdom books can provide comfort and stability:
The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want. He makes me lie down in green pastures. He leads me beside still waters. He restores my soul. He leads me in paths of righteousness for his name’s sake. Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me. You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies; you anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows. Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life, and I shall dwell in the house of the Lord forever.
Psalm 23:1-6
Again, reminding ourselves of the truth, of what is wise and good, can give us comfort and give us a foundation to stand on. I’m grateful that God knew us so intimately that beyond facts and doctrine and all these things in the Bible, He also included beautiful poetry and wisdom to give us guidance for our lives.
I hope this weekend you’re able to come and drink deeply of the wisdom of God. He fulfills and sustains us, so we can trust in His gentle words that mark our path.
